WASHINGTON – Vice-President J.D. Vance defended President Donald Trump’s nominee for Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, amidst criticism over her qualifications and political leanings. Speaking on CBS’s Face the Nation, Vance accused US intelligence agencies of being “out of control” and praised Gabbard as the right person to restore trust in the system.
“The bureaucrats at our intelligence services have been part of the weaponisation of our political and justice systems,” said Vance. “We need intelligence services that keep us safe, and we believe Tulsi is the right person to lead that change.”
Gabbard’s nomination in November stirred controversy, given her limited intelligence experience and past criticism of Trump. Critics fear her appointment could further politicize the intelligence community. However, her supporters highlight her military background and alignment with Trump’s “America First” policies.
Vance dismissed concerns about Gabbard’s qualifications, citing her high-level security clearance and nearly two decades of military service. “She has impeccable character and a proven record of service,” he said, expressing confidence in her Senate confirmation.
The Senate Intelligence Committee is set to hold a hearing on Gabbard’s nomination on January 30, as debates continue over her potential impact on US intelligence operations.
