Thousands Report Netflix Live-Stream Crashes During Mike Tyson-Jake Paul Fight

California – Tens of thousands of Netflix users experienced disruptions on Nov 15, just before the highly anticipated fight between former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson and YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. Many viewers reported that the live-stream was failing to load, sparking frustration among fans eager to watch the event.

The hashtag NetflixCrash quickly trended on social media platform X as complaints flooded in. Downdetector, a website that monitors internet service outages, recorded over 500,000 reports of streaming issues, with users highlighting problems specific to the Paul-Tyson match.

Netflix has yet to comment on the matter. The live event, titled Paul v Tyson, was scheduled to stream globally for about 4.5 hours, with the boxing match starting at 10 p.m. Eastern Time. The disruption left many viewers posting videos and screenshots of frozen streams on their devices.

The fight, an eight-round heavyweight match, was one of the most publicized events on the platform. Jake Paul later joked about the situation in a post-fight interview, saying, “We crashed the site,” after defeating Tyson in the ring. However, the exact cause of the streaming issues remains unclear.

Frustrations mounted on social media, with users questioning whether the problem was with their internet connections or Netflix itself. Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, described his experience on X, saying, “I’m in the classic torture chamber where I can’t tell if my internet keeps going out or whether #Netflix is just constantly buffering and unwatchable for everybody.”

Reports of the outage were widespread, with Downdetector’s tracking map showing issues across the United States. The disruption marked a rare setback for Netflix, which has a subscriber base of 283 million in over 190 countries.

Despite the technical hiccup, the fight between Tyson and Paul remained a major attraction, highlighting the growing trend of streaming platforms venturing into live sports and entertainment events. However, the incident also raises questions about the platform’s preparedness to handle such high-demand live events.
