MADRID – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Thursday that he will visit Kyiv on Monday to express support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Ukraine’s democracy. The visit comes after U.S. President Donald Trump labeled Zelenskiy a “dictator” and shifted U.S. policy on the Russia-Ukraine war, raising concerns among European allies.
Trump’s comments and his decision to engage in direct peace talks with the Kremlin—excluding Ukraine and European partners—have sparked fears that his approach could favor Moscow. In response, Sanchez emphasized Spain’s solidarity with Ukraine, writing on social media platform X, “I’ll be in Kyiv on Monday to reaffirm Spain’s support for the Ukrainian democracy and President Zelenskiy.”
The diplomatic move underscores Europe’s commitment to Ukraine amidst growing unease over the U.S.’s evolving stance on the conflict, which is now in its fourth year.
