KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced his support for a street rally in Kuala Lumpur on January 25, distancing himself from earlier statements by the police and home minister that special permits were required for such gatherings.
The rally, organized by the People’s Secretariat Against Corruption, is set to highlight concerns over the government’s handling of corruption cases and judicial independence. Critics have accused Mr. Anwar of hypocrisy, given his past as a student leader and opposition figure who frequently championed protests without police permits.
The protest agenda calls for significant reforms, including separating the Attorney-General’s Chambers from the Prime Minister’s Office and ensuring the independence of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. The event has drawn widespread attention as Mr. Anwar faces increasing scrutiny over his administration’s anti-graft efforts and alliances with controversial political figures.
