Greek PM Opposes Scrapping Schengen to Address Migration Issues

ATHENS – Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated on September 12 that the challenges posed by increased migration flows should not be met by unilaterally dismantling the Schengen zone. His comments came in response to Germany’s recent decision to implement tighter border checks within the Schengen area starting September 16, in an effort to manage irregular migration.

In an interview with a Greek radio station, Mitsotakis argued that such measures would unfairly shift the burden onto countries at Europe’s external borders. He emphasized that a more effective solution would involve a “fair compromise” among all European nations, acknowledging the necessity to safeguard Europe’s external borders while maintaining the integrity of the Schengen zone.
