Fourth-Generation Malaysian Barber Keeps 100-Year Tradition Alive with $3 Haircuts

IPOH, MALAYSIA — Mr. M. Selvaraj, a fourth-generation barber, is continuing a century-old family tradition of providing affordable haircuts at his shop in Ipoh, charging just RM10 (S$3) per haircut. The business, started by his great-grandfather, Mr. R. Kupusami, began near the Kinta River under a large tree before moving to its current location.

Selvaraj, known as “Raj” to his customers, took over the family business 12 years ago. He learned the trade at 16 and has maintained the shop’s traditional style, which has drawn customers from all walks of life, including international visitors. His affordable rates, free haircuts for underprivileged clients, and discounts for students have endeared him to the local community.

During the pandemic, Selvaraj adapted by offering house-to-house haircuts and, after recovering from a recent accident, his loyal customers even visited his home for services. He believes his popularity stems from not only his skill but also his signature cooling lotion, which customers enjoy after their haircut.

Despite the rise of modern barbershops, Selvaraj’s old-school methods, such as sharpening blades on a leather strop, continue to attract customers who appreciate the traditional experience.
