SEOUL – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio assured South Korea’s Foreign Minister that the United States remains committed to maintaining a stable and trusting relationship with South Korea, regardless of domestic political changes in either country, the South Korean foreign ministry said in a statement on Friday.
Rubio and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul met in Germany and reaffirmed their commitment to working closely toward the complete denuclearisation of North Korea. They also expressed concerns over growing military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, the ministry stated.
Beyond security matters, both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in key industries such as energy, shipbuilding, nuclear power, and liquefied natural gas (LNG), underscoring their shared interest in advanced technologies.
Addressing trade concerns, Cho requested that U.S. tariff issues be resolved through close bilateral consultation. In response, Rubio emphasized the need for discussions between relevant ministries to find a constructive resolution, according to the statement.
