WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Republican Representative Elise Stefanik of New York to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, according to a statement Trump shared with Reuters on Monday.
“I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” Trump stated.
Stefanik, who currently serves as House Republican Conference chair, has been a prominent Trump supporter and ally in Congress. Known for her firm stance on Trump’s “America First” policies, Stefanik has gained recognition within the party as a resilient advocate for conservative values.
Stefanik has yet to comment on her nomination. Trump’s statement also clarified that former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will not be returning to the administration. Haley had previously served in the role during Trump’s first term but will not be asked to rejoin, despite endorsing him in this election cycle.
As Trump prepares for his January 20 inauguration, he continues to meet with potential candidates for his administration. Notably, Trump has also interviewed investor Scott Bessent, a possible nominee for Treasury Secretary, according to reports from Reuters.
