Schumer Told Biden He Should End Re-Election Bid, ABC News Reports

WASHINGTON – Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer advised President Joe Biden in a meeting last week that it would be better for the country and the Democratic Party if he ended his re-election campaign, ABC News reported on July 17.

Schumer’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters regarding the report. According to ABC News, the private meeting occurred on July 13 at Biden’s home in Rehoboth, Delaware. “I sat with President Biden this afternoon in Delaware; we had a good meeting,” Schumer said in a statement released on July 13.

Earlier on July 17, Democratic US Representative Adam Schiff became the 20th congressional Democrat to publicly call for Biden to drop out of the race. Concerns among Democrats about the 81-year-old incumbent’s ability to defeat Republican challenger Donald Trump, or to serve another four years in office, have surged following Biden’s faltering performance during the June 27 debate.
