MOSCOW – Russia summoned Moldova’s ambassador to Moscow on Monday, condemning what it described as “unfounded accusations” by a Moldovan political party against the Russian ambassador in Chisinau.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the political party had demanded the expulsion of the Russian ambassador and restrictions on the operations of Russia’s embassy in Moldova. The ministry did not name the party involved.
Tensions between the two nations have escalated, with Moldovan President Maia Sandu accusing Russia of orchestrating an energy crisis to destabilize the country and push for a pro-Moscow government. President Sandu shared these concerns with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy during discussions on Saturday.
Russia has denied any involvement in Moldova’s internal affairs, dismissing the allegations as baseless. The diplomatic exchange underscores the strained relations between Moscow and Chisinau amid broader regional tensions.
