New York – Sally Buzbee, formerly the executive editor of the Washington Post, has been named News Editor for the United States and Canada at Reuters. The global news agency announced on Tuesday that Buzbee, 59, will start her new role on December 11, where she will oversee coverage of key events, including the upcoming U.S. presidential term if Donald Trump returns to office.
Buzbee succeeds Kieran Murray, who will transition to leading Reuters’ live events business after eight years managing the Washington bureau and overseeing U.S. and Canadian operations.
Alessandra Galloni, Reuters Editor-in-Chief, expressed enthusiasm about the appointment, highlighting Buzbee’s “journalistic chops, management experience, and global understanding.” Galloni added that Buzbee’s pragmatic approach is crucial in a period marked by significant upheaval in both global affairs and the news industry.
Buzbee’s departure from the Washington Post in June followed internal restructuring led by new CEO William Lewis. Before her tenure at the Post, where she became the first woman to head the newsroom and won several Pulitzer Prizes, Buzbee was the executive editor of the Associated Press, where she also led award-winning coverage.
Her new position at Reuters comes as the agency broadens its consumer-focused offerings, including a subscription website, newsletters, and podcasts, adapting to evolving media landscapes and audience needs.
