NEW DELHI – In the aftermath of a devastating terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that left 28 people dead, Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a powerful declaration on Thursday, promising that those behind the violence would be relentlessly pursued and held accountable.
Speaking publicly for the first time since the attack, PM Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives, while pledging unwavering action. “The country mourns with the families who lost their loved ones. Those responsible will face severe consequences—far beyond anything they can imagine,” he asserted.
Reaffirming India’s resolve against terrorism, the Prime Minister stated, “Our spirit will never be shattered. From this land of Bihar, I assure the world that we will trace and punish every terrorist and those who shelter them, no matter where they hide.”
PM Modi also expressed gratitude for the global solidarity shown, saying, “Humanity stands united against terror. I thank the international community and world leaders who have stood by us in this difficult time.”
The deadly attack, which occurred in the serene Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam—a popular tourist destination—was reportedly carried out by six foreign terrorists disguised in military attire. Victims, including 26 Indian nationals and two foreign tourists, were targeted during a peaceful afternoon surrounded by mountains and pine forests.
In response, India has escalated diplomatic pressure on Pakistan, citing cross-border involvement in the attack. Pakistan’s senior diplomat Saad Ahmad Warraich was summoned and handed an official expulsion notice. India has also suspended key bilateral agreements, including the Indus Waters Treaty, closed the Attari check post, and revoked visa privileges under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals.
This marks India’s strongest diplomatic move since downgrading ties with Pakistan in 2020, signaling a new phase of stringent countermeasures following what officials called an attack on peace and progress in the region.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also vowed a decisive and unmistakable response, reinforcing that India’s patience has limits and its actions will speak loudest.
