Mexico’s President Sheinbaum Vows to Defend Sovereignty While Pursuing Dialogue with Trump

MEXICO CITY – In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive actions that began on January 20, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum pledged to safeguard her nation’s sovereignty and independence while remaining open to dialogue with the new U.S. administration.

Trump’s first day in office included a series of sweeping measures aimed at curbing migration, including a declaration of a national emergency over illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border, and designating Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations. The president also suggested imposing across-the-board tariffs on Mexican and Canadian exports, which could come into effect in February.

At her regular morning press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized that while Mexico would uphold a humanitarian approach to migration matters, her government would also work to repatriate foreign migrants to their countries of origin. She expressed a commitment to working with the U.S. on security coordination and revisiting trade terms in 2026.

The Mexican peso showed signs of recovery, trimming losses on January 21 and trading at 20.6489 per U.S. dollar amid the ongoing diplomatic developments.
