Mexican president to talk with US President-elect Trump later Thursday

MEXICO CITY – Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced plans to hold a “cordial” telephone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday morning, marking their first direct communication since Trump’s election victory on Tuesday. Sheinbaum emphasized that the call would serve to extend congratulations, with detailed discussions on trade, migration, and security to follow in future engagements. She has consistently expressed a commitment to maintaining strong relations with the United States, Mexico’s principal trading partner.

During his campaign, Trump proposed imposing a 25% tariff on Mexican exports if Mexico does not curb the flow of migrants into the U.S.  In response, Sheinbaum reassured Mexicans that there is no cause for concern regarding Trump’s victory, asserting that Mexico will continue to uphold its sovereignty and maintain a positive relationship with the United States.

As both leaders prepare to assume office, the international community is closely monitoring how their administrations will navigate the complexities of U.S.-Mexico relations, particularly in areas such as trade policies, immigration, and security cooperation.
