The Melaka government has unveiled plans to convert a stretch along Phase Two of Sungai Melaka into a dedicated recreational area for water sports activities, such as dragon boat and canoe boat racing. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh announced that this initiative aims to transform the river into a major tourist attraction for Visit Melaka Year 2024.
To kickstart the project, Ab Rauf stated that he would request the Melaka River and Coastal Development Corporation (PPSPM) to submit a designated schedule for recreational and water sports training activities, including canoe boat and dragon boat racing, along Phase Two of Sungai Melaka. The plan aims to not only attract tourists but also to entice water sports enthusiasts to participate in various activities.
Addressing reporters at the official launch of the Melaka Dragon Boat race held at the Dataran Pengkalan Rama stretch of Sungai Melaka, Ab Rauf clarified that the plan solely focuses on Phase Two of Sungai Melaka, as Phase One is primarily occupied by the Melaka River Cruise and is not suitable for water sports activities.
Highlighting the significance of Melaka’s Dragon Boat Racing event, Ab Rauf stated that it will be one of the main attractions for TMM 2024, with both local and foreign participants expected to join the competition. He expressed optimism about the event’s potential as an international showcase, envisioning several improvements that could be implemented next year.
The Melaka government’s initiative to transform Sungai Melaka into a recreational water sports area underscores the commitment to enhance tourism offerings and promote Melaka as an exciting destination for water sports enthusiasts. By leveraging the natural beauty of the river, the authorities aim to attract visitors and participants to engage in thrilling water sports activities during Visit Melaka Year 2024
