Mauritius Opposition Secures Sweeping Victory in General Elections

PORT LOUIS – In a historic electoral shift, Mauritius’ opposition coalition, Alliance du Changement (ADC), has won a decisive victory in the island nation’s recent general elections. Led by veteran politician Navin Ramgoolam, ADC claimed 62.6% of the votes, securing 60 out of 62 seats in the legislative assembly. This sweeping win grants Ramgoolam a fourth term as prime minister.

Ramgoolam’s return to office comes with promises of major reforms aimed at boosting transparency and addressing economic challenges. In his post-election speech, he emphasized a plan to dismantle what he described as a restrictive surveillance system, pledging to protect citizens’ freedom of speech and ensure a transparent government. Additionally, Ramgoolam has laid out a strategy focused on economic reforms to address rising living costs, a significant concern among voters.

The outgoing administration, led by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, conceded defeat, marking an end to his tenure after a five-year term. Jugnauth, who presided over an economy that experienced strong growth in recent years, faced criticism for failing to address rising inflation and allegations of corruption, both of which were pivotal issues in the election campaign.

The ADC’s landslide victory highlights a strong public demand for change, particularly in handling the economy and promoting governmental accountability. The new administration is expected to prioritize policies aimed at economic stabilization, removing VAT on essential goods, and fostering a transparent political climate.
