SERDANG, MALAYSIA — Malaysia has renewed the intellectual property protection for the famous Musang King durian, commonly known as Mao Shan Wang, extending its status as a protected Malaysian brand until March 12, 2034. The renewal by Malaysia’s Intellectual Property Corporation (MyIPO) ensures that the Mao Shan Wang durian remains a geographically indicated (GI) brand belonging exclusively to Malaysia.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu emphasized that the GI registration prevents other countries from using the “Mao Shan Wang” name for durians that do not meet Malaysia’s established standards. The durian variety was first registered as an intellectual property under geographical indication on March 13, 2014.
The GI registration recognizes the durian’s reputation and quality, which has gained international acclaim, particularly in China. Recently, Malaysia exported 40 tonnes of durians, including Mao Shan Wang, to China, where the premium variety is highly sought after despite costing up to RM350 (S$108) per fruit.
Minister Mohamad encouraged durian farmers to maintain and improve the quality of their produce to capitalize on the growing demand for the fruit, which has become a lucrative export product for Malaysia.
