Lithuania’s Election Winner Pledges 3.5% of GDP for Defense Amid Rising Security Concerns

VILNIUS – Lithuania’s newly elected Social Democratic government announced a commitment to allocate at least 3.5% of its GDP toward defense spending, aiming to bolster security as regional threats grow. The Baltic nation, sharing a border with Russia, is already among NATO’s top defense spenders, with 3% of its GDP directed to its military this year.

Party leader Vilija Blinkeviciute said that defense funding is essential for Lithuania’s security, following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine and poll results showing 75% of Lithuanians fear a potential Russian attack.

The Social Democrats’ election campaign, marked by promises to address cost-of-living issues and enhance defense, won them 52 of 141 parliamentary seats. With plans to form a new government by mid-December, they pledge to continue Lithuania’s strong support for Ukraine and maintain a firm stance toward Russia.
