Indonesian government to phase out single-use plastics by end of 2029

Indonesian government will be banning single-use plastics by edge of the year 2029. Plastic cutlery, plastic shopping bags, plastic straws and styrofoam for food packaging are among the products targeted by the ban. Indonesia’s Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar stated on Monday that the government will begin to force a ban on single-use plastic products by the edge of 2029. Ms Siti Nurbaya explained that the plastic products which will be banned involve plastic straws, plastic cutlery and plastic shopping bags. The government is initiating to devote its time towards 70 per cent waste management and 30 per cent waste depletion by 2025, as mandated in Presidential Regulation No. 97/2017 on household waste management. To reduce the usage of plastic , the Environment and Forestry Ministry has enforced quite a few  regulations. In January, Ms Siti Nurbaya expressed that the government will be passionately taking responsibility of the problem of waste from the upstream and downstream life cycle of products.
