Indonesian Court Sentences Former Agriculture Minister to 10 Years for Corruption

JAKARTA – On July 11, an Indonesian court sentenced former agriculture minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo to 10 years in prison for corruption related to personal expenditures, including travel in private jets and jewelry for his wife.

Prosecutors revealed that Limpo had extorted over 44 billion rupiah (S$3.7 million) from officials within the Agriculture Ministry to fund his personal expenses. In addition to his prison sentence, Limpo was fined 300 million rupiah and ordered to pay approximately 14.6 billion rupiah in compensation, as stated by Judge Rianto Adam Pontoh.

Two other defendants in the case, both former senior officials at the Agriculture Ministry, received sentences of four years each. Limpo is the sixth minister from President Joko Widodo’s Cabinet to face corruption charges. Earlier in 2024, a former communications minister received a 15-year jail sentence for corruption, following the imprisonment of the social affairs and fisheries ministers in 2021.
