JAKARTA – Indonesia’s government has signed a memorandum of understanding with a Qatari investor to construct one million affordable homes, a key initiative under President Prabowo Subianto’s administration.
The agreement was signed on Jan 8 by Housing Minister Maruarar Sirait and Sheikh Abdulaziz Abdulrahman Al Thani, chairman of Qatar’s Qilaa International Group, at a ceremony at the presidential palace, with President Prabowo in attendance.
“We prioritise the lower middle class who lives in the cities,” Mr. Maruarar stated, emphasizing the target demographic for the project. The government will provide land for the construction of the apartments, while the Qatari investor will act as the contractor and financer.
During his campaign, President Prabowo pledged to address housing shortages by building three million homes annually, focusing on both urban and rural areas to support lower-income communities. This collaboration is seen as a significant step towards fulfilling that promise and improving housing accessibility for Indonesia’s lower middle class.
