India, Nepal leaders pledge closer ties after meeting

NEW DELHI — Rabi Lamichhane, chairman of Nepal’s Rastriya Swatantra Party, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on wednesday as both leaders expressed a commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation.

Modi said he was pleased with the meeting and welcomed Lamichhane’s intent to work closely for “a shared and prosperous future.” He reiterated that Nepal remains a priority for India under the Neighbourhood First policy and expressed eagerness to engage the new Nepali government to strengthen the two countries’ “special and multifaceted” relationship.

In a post on X, the prime minister wrote: “Delighted to meet the Chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party of Nepal Mr. Rabi Lamichhane. I welcome and fully share his desire to work closely together for a shared and prosperous future. Nepal is a priority partner under our Neighbourhood First policy and we look forward to collaborating with the new government to elevate the special and multifaceted relationship between our two countries to greater heights.”
