TODENDORF, Germany – Chancellor Olaf Scholz assured that Germany will continue its military support for Ukraine, dispelling concerns over potential budget constraints. Speaking at a military base near Todendorf on Wednesday, Scholz emphasized Germany’s long-term commitment, following media reports suggesting a freeze on new aid.
“Germany’s support for Ukraine will not cease,” Scholz said, stressing that provisions and defense deals are in place to ensure Kyiv can rely on Berlin’s backing in the future.
Earlier, a German newspaper had reported that budget issues could halt additional military aid, which caused European defense stocks to fall. However, the government later refuted the claim, reaffirming its stance to support Ukraine “as long as necessary.”
Scholz’s remarks coincided with the operational launch of Germany’s first IRIS-T SLM air defense system. Germany has already supplied four out of 12 pledged IRIS-T units to Ukraine, with two more expected by the end of the year. The systems have been critical in defending Kyiv against Russian missile attacks, boasting a 95% success rate in intercepting over 250 missiles, drones, and cruise missiles.
The IRIS-T system, produced by Diehl, has proven effective in targeting Russian cruise missiles and Iranian-made Shahed drones, providing vital protection for Ukrainian infrastructure and saving countless lives.
