EU Trade Chief: US Unwilling to Engage in Talks to Prevent Tariff Conflict

BRUSSELS – The European Union’s trade commissioner, Maros Sefcovic, has expressed concern over the Trump administration’s apparent reluctance to negotiate and prevent a looming trade conflict, as the US prepares to impose tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Sefcovic revealed that his recent visit to Washington aimed to initiate discussions to avoid the economic strain of retaliatory measures. While both sides identified potential areas of cooperation, he lamented the lack of engagement from the US.

“One hand cannot clap. The US administration does not seem to be engaging to make a deal,” Sefcovic stated. He emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue, warning that tariffs benefit no one and urging caution given the €1.6 trillion (US$1.7 trillion) in annual trade between the two economies.

“Our doors remain open, but if no positive outcome is reached, we will take necessary steps to protect European businesses, workers, and consumers from unjustified tariffs,” he affirmed. The EU has made it clear that it expects fair trade practices and will not hesitate to respond if necessary.
