The development of society is closely connected to the importance of education and mental health. A person’s life is not defined solely by personal achievements, but also by the way they use their knowledge and experiences to improve the lives of others. Understanding people’s problems, helping them overcome stress, and encouraging positive thinking require sensitivity, patience, and continuous effort. With these values at the core of his work, Dr.Manohar Gururani chose psychology as his professional field and dedicated himself to helping people achieve positive changes in their mental well-being and behaviour.
Dr. Manohar Gururani was born in Almora, located in Uttarakhand, India. His father, the late Lokmani Gururani, was a teacher and storyteller, while his mother, the late Heera Gururani, was a homemaker. His parents and teachers played an important role in shaping his life and values. Growing up in a rural environment, he observed his mother participating in religious activities and community service. His father, in addition to being a teacher and storyteller, was often approached by people seeking advice about their family problems. Witnessing his parents’ efforts to understand and help others gradually developed a sense of service in Dr. Gururani and influenced his decision to work for the well-being of people.
He began his education at the Government Primary School in Barakot, Jaiti, Almora. He later completed his schooling at Sarvodaya Inter College, Jaiti, Almora. For higher education, he enrolled at Kumaun University Campus, Almora, now known as Soban Singh Jeena University, Almora. He pursued an M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology and also completed his Bachelor of Laws. During his educational journey, he gradually developed an interest in understanding people’s problems and helping them bring positive changes to their lives. Although his purpose was not entirely clear at the beginning, his experiences and evolving perspectives eventually guided him towards psychology as a professional field.
The central purpose of Dr. Gururani’s work has been to help people cope with the mental stress arising from the fast-paced and demanding circumstances of modern life. He believes that when individuals face difficulties, they often become overwhelmed by fear, anxiety, and negative thoughts. In such situations, approaching problems by breaking them down into smaller, manageable parts can help individuals move towards solutions. Positive thinking and consistent efforts towards achieving one’s goals hold an important place in his approach. He also emphasises the importance of maintaining confidentiality while working with people and addressing their personal concerns.
Dr. Gururani had the opportunity to work as a counsellor at the District Hospital in Almora. During this period, he worked towards bringing positive changes to the thinking and behaviour of various individuals and students. According to his experiences, understanding people’s concerns and helping them address negative thoughts through psychological methods formed an important part of his work. He has also shared an incident involving a person experiencing mental distress and unusual behavioural changes. Dr.Gururani brought the individual to his home and worked with him using psychological approaches, attempting to address the negative thoughts associated with his financial difficulties. According to his account, the person eventually resumed a normal life. This experience became an example of the significance of psychological counselling in his professional journey.
His journey has not been limited to education and psychology; he also participated in social and political activities during his student years. While studying at Kumaun University Campus, Almora, his interactions with political figures and involvement in student politics led him to become associated with the university’s student union. Over time, however, his perspectives changed, and he decided to move away from political life and focus on psychology. He subsequently worked as a counsellor at the Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centre (VCTC) at the District Hospital in Almora. Later, he had the opportunity to work as a psychologist under the state government, where he focused on students. He considers his current work among students belonging to tribal communities a privilege and an important responsibility.
Dr. Gururani places considerable importance on the relationship between education and mental health. He believes that a healthy mind enables individuals to develop positive thoughts, absorb knowledge, and perform better academically. When students experience mental distress, they may find it difficult to concentrate on their studies, which can also affect their intellectual development. For this reason, he emphasises the need to establish a connection between education and mental well-being. Working towards positive behavioural changes among students and supporting the development of their personalities remains an important part of his professional efforts.
His message to young people centres on self-awareness, positive thinking, and consistent hard work. He encourages young individuals to develop positive thoughts, avoid negative thinking, and remain focused on their goals. He believes that in today’s world, despite the widespread use of mobile phones and social connections, individuals should develop a mentally independent outlook to face challenging situations. He also considers reading religious books, engaging in regular exercise and practising yoga beneficial for a balanced life. At the same time, he advises young people to avoid comparing themselves with others and instead work towards developing their individuality and building a better future.
The life of Dr. Manohar Gururani illustrates how education, family values, and a commitment to helping others can shape an individual’s path. Beginning his journey in a rural setting, he chose psychology as his professional field and worked on issues related to the mental health of individuals and students in different circumstances. His approach reflects a connection between positive thinking, education, mental well-being, and social service. His efforts to understand people’s problems and help them move towards better lives remain central to his professional journey and the values that guide his work.
