New Delhi – In a historic comeback, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reclaimed power in the Delhi capital district after nearly three decades. The victory comes as a significant boost for Modi and his party following a challenging national election last year.
According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, decisively defeating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which won only 22. AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal, had been in power since 2015 and previously held a strong voter base through welfare schemes.
Following the results, Modi assured Delhi residents of his party’s commitment to development, stating on social media platform X, “We will spare no effort in transforming Delhi and enhancing the quality of life for its people.”
AAP, which emerged from an anti-corruption movement in 2012, faced setbacks in this election, particularly after Kejriwal’s arrest on graft charges earlier in the year. Kejriwal, who had stepped down as Chief Minister to focus on campaigning, also lost his contesting seat. He has accused the Modi-led government of political targeting, though the BJP has dismissed these claims.
Despite the defeat, Kejriwal emphasized that AAP would continue to work as a responsible opposition, acknowledging its contributions to Delhi’s infrastructure, education, and healthcare over the past decade.
In response to AAP’s welfare initiatives, the BJP had promised a series of financial benefits, including monthly allowances for women and pension schemes for the elderly and youth. These pledges appear to have resonated with voters, contributing to BJP’s resurgence in the capital.
Modi, who returned as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term with support from regional allies, has been gaining momentum through recent state election victories. This latest win in Delhi strengthens the BJP’s presence in the upper house of parliament, further consolidating its legislative influence.
