INDIA — A political rally organized by Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay ended in tragedy when at least 29 people lost their lives and about 50 others were injured after a stampede-like situation in Karur, Tamil Nadu, the Hindu reported, citing the state’s Health Minister, Ma. Subramanian.
The massive gathering was part of Vijay’s ongoing state tour for his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), ahead of the upcoming state elections scheduled for early 2026. Authorities rushed emergency medical support to the site. At least 44 doctors from neighboring Tiruchirappalli and Salem districts were deployed to Karur to provide immediate treatment for the injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the tragedy. “The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening,” he posted on X.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also reacted, calling the developments “worrying.” In a statement on X, he said he had instructed ministers and health officials to urgently provide medical assistance to those affected. Stalin further confirmed that additional support had been mobilized from Tiruchirappalli.
As of late Saturday, calls to the state health ministry and the chief minister’s office remained unanswered, underscoring the mounting pressure on authorities to ensure proper relief measures. The incident highlights the risks of massive political gatherings in India, where unregulated crowd surges often lead to tragic outcomes.
