Advocate Varsha Deshpande is one such courageous individual. For more than three decades, she has waged an unrelenting battle against one of India’s most disturbing social evils, gender-biased sex selection and the systematic disappearance of girl children.

As a lawyer and social reformer, she understood that legislation alone could not eradicate discrimination. Changing mindsets was equally important. Through workshops, public campaigns and community engagement programs, she tirelessly educated families about the equal worth of daughters and emphasized that true social progress can only be achieved when girls are given the same opportunities, dignity and respect as boys.
What makes Varsha Deshpande’s journey particularly inspiring is her perseverance. Fighting a social evil that is hidden behind closed doors and supported by long-standing cultural biases is neither easy nor glamorous. There were moments of frustration, opposition and fatigue, yet she never allowed setbacks to weaken her commitment.
