UK to Announce Largest Sanctions Package Against Russia, Says PM Keir Starmer

LONDON – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday that the United Kingdom will introduce its most extensive package of sanctions against Russia since the early days of the Ukraine war. Speaking via video link at an international meeting marking the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion, Starmer emphasized that the Group of Seven (G7) wealthy nations should be prepared to take on more risks to increase pressure on Moscow.

“I’m clear that the G7 should be ready to take on more risk, including on the oil price cap, sanctioning Russia’s oil giants, and going after the banks that are enabling the evasion of sanctions,” Starmer said. He also indicated that the upcoming UK sanctions would target vessels used to help Russia circumvent existing measures and include actions against companies in China and other countries supplying military components to Russia.

Earlier in the day, the British government announced plans to ban entry to individuals who provide significant support to, or have gained wealth through connections to, the Russian state. Full details of the new sanctions package have not yet been released, but it is expected to further tighten economic restrictions on Moscow as the conflict in Ukraine continues.
