LONDON – British Defence Minister John Healey expressed confidence on Nov 11 that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will continue to support NATO and Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression. In an interview with Sky News, Healey emphasized that the U.S. commitment to European security and alliances is expected to stay strong under Trump’s leadership.
“Trump recognizes that countries secure themselves through strength, as do alliances like NATO,” Healey stated, adding that he anticipates the U.S. will stand with allies, including the UK, in supporting Ukraine until it achieves victory over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces.
Healey also stressed the need for European nations to share more responsibility in boosting defense spending, highlighting his longstanding argument that Europe should contribute more heavily to its own security. “I don’t expect the U.S. to turn away from NATO,” he remarked. “They understand the importance of the alliance and the critical need to prevent further conflict in Europe.”
Healey’s comments come as European leaders look to reaffirm their defense strategies and commitment to shared security amid a shifting geopolitical landscape.
