WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on June 1 asserted that negotiations with Iran were still underway, countering reports that Tehran had paused indirect talks with Washington aimed at de‑escalating regional hostilities.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that discussions were “continuing, at a rapid pace, with the Islamic Republic of Iran.” The statement came after Iranian state news agency Tasnim said Tehran had halted indirect negotiations following Israel’s decision to push troops further into Lebanon.
In interviews with U.S. media, Trump said he had not been notified of any suspension. “They haven’t informed us of that,” he told NBC News, adding that a period of silence between the parties would be acceptable and perhaps beneficial. He said a talks suspension would not trigger U.S. strikes on Iran, though the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports would remain in effect.
To CNBC, Trump was more dismissive, saying he “didn’t care if they’re over.” Minutes after those interviews surfaced, he posted his Truth Social message reaffirming that talks were continuing.
