KATHMANDU — Gandaki Provincial Assembly member Tika Kumari Basyal has secured a decisive victory as a Central General Convention representative of the Nepali Congress from Lamjung, marking a significant moment for women’s leadership and inclusive politics in Nepal.
Basyal defeated her closest rival by a margin of 377 votes in a fiercely contested organisational election held under the party’s 15th General Convention. Her commanding vote share reaffirmed her strong popularity among party members and communities across Lamjung.
Born in Doti in far-western Nepal, Basyal began her political journey while she was still in Grade 7, joining the Nepal Students’ Union in Kailali. Since then, she has overcome social barriers, caste-based discrimination and the challenges of a male-dominated political environment to emerge as a determined public leader.
As a member of the Gandaki Provincial Assembly, Basyal has championed development initiatives in Lamjung, including rural roads, drinking-water facilities, education and healthcare projects. Her supporters credit her with helping secure development budgets, monitoring projects on the ground and promoting transparency in the delivery of public services.
Her development-focused leadership and direct engagement with citizens have strengthened her public image across the district. She has consistently raised the concerns of disadvantaged communities, women and marginalised citizens both inside the legislature and beyond it.
During the campaign, Basyal highlighted the democratic ideals of the late Nepali Congress leader Girija Prasad Koirala and the historic legacy of the party. Her message focused on equality, social justice, the rights of Dalits and a commitment to building a society in which every community moves forward together.
Her victory carries a powerful message: women in politics are not merely representatives of a quota system; they are capable of becoming strong, logical, effective and visionary leaders. Basyal’s achievement demonstrates how perseverance, courage and public service can overcome deep-rooted social and political barriers.
Party members in Lamjung described her as a committed, thoughtful and development-oriented leader. They expressed confidence that her presence at the national organisational level would strengthen both the Nepali Congress and the voice of Lamjung in Nepal’s wider political landscape.
Basyal’s election is being celebrated as a milestone for women’s empowerment and inclusive leadership. Her journey from a young student activist to a prominent provincial politician offers inspiration to a new generation of women and members of marginalised communities who aspire to serve the public and shape the future of Nepal.
