Syria Appoints New Foreign Minister as Post-Assad Era Begins

DAMASCUS – Syria’s new rulers have appointed Mr. Asaad Hassan al-Shibani as foreign minister, marking a significant step in rebuilding international relations following the ousting of former president Bashar al-Assad two weeks ago, state news agency Sana reported on Dec 21.

The 37-year-old Damascus University graduate previously led the political department of a rebel government in Idlib. Under the leadership of de facto ruler Ahmed al-Sharaa, the new administration has prioritized reconstruction and economic development, signaling openness to diplomatic engagement while steering clear of new conflicts.

While the international community welcomed the end of Assad’s regime, questions remain about whether Sharaa’s Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) will lean towards strict Islamic rule or a more democratic approach.
