Six Death toll rises to 40 after glacial lake flooding in Indian Himalayas, dozens still missing

Around 40 people lost their lives after a glacial lake burst its banks and which resulted in dreadful flash floods this week in the Indian Himalayas, government officials revealed to Reuters on Friday as rescuers kept their eyes looking for so many people who went missing for a second day. The Lhonak Lake in the mountainous north-eastern state of Sikkim overflowed on Wednesday after a cloudburst led to unstoppable downpours and an apparent avalanche, leading to thick flooding in the Teesta River.

It is one of the most dangerous and harmful disasters in the area in more than 50 years and the recent in a series of intense weather occassions that have led to widespread destruction in South Asia’s Himalayas in last years, blamed by scientists on climate change. The authorities in Sikkim said the recent disaster, which came ahead of a well known festive and tourism season in the scenic state, had affected majorly the lives of around 22,000 people.

“We got calls from people that river levels had the possibility of increasing at 3am and we ran for our lives,” revealed Mr Javed Ahmed Ansari, 44, a resident of Teesta valley, who has a river rafting business. “We ran towards the hill in the forest.. We located abodes getting swept away. I can currently only see the first floor of our abode, which is full of sand, every bit of it seems to be submerged.”
