Parts of China Take Action to Preserve Dialects as Regional Languages Face Decline

BEIJING – In a bid to preserve regional dialects that are slowly fading away, Mr. Zhou Sheng, 46, has spent the past year teaching the Changsha dialect to primary school students in the capital of Hunan province, central China.

Driven by a deep passion for his hometown’s linguistic heritage, Mr. Zhou is committed to saving the local dialect, which he fears is disappearing as younger generations no longer speak it. “The once-familiar sounds of the Changsha dialect are fading from our streets,” he laments.
