Mexico Prepared for Possible US Tariffs, Says President Sheinbaum

MEXICO CITY – Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on March 3 that her country is ready for any decision the U.S. makes regarding potential tariffs, as President Donald Trump threatens to impose trade penalties on March 4.

Speaking at a morning press conference, Sheinbaum assured that Mexico has contingency plans in place. “We have a plan B, C, D,” she stated, without disclosing specifics, adding that she would provide more details once the U.S. announces its course of action.

Mexican officials recently met with their American counterparts in Washington to discuss trade and security policies, aiming to prevent the tariffs. Trump has accused Mexico and Canada of failing to curb the flow of synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl, and migrant crossings into the U.S., vowing to impose sweeping tariffs unless stricter measures are taken.

Despite the looming threat, Sheinbaum described the Washington meetings as “cordial” and emphasized that cooperation with the U.S. remains strong.
