Malaysia coalition to serve full term, minister says amid election rumours

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s coalition government will remain in office until the end of its parliamentary term, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said on May 20, seeking to quell rumours of an early general election.

Speaking after a Cabinet meeting, Fahmi said key partners, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and Gabungan Parti Sarawak, have pledged continued support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration through the full term. His comments followed recent concern about the government’s stability after Anwar himself mentioned the possibility of a snap vote during a period of heightened tensions within the ruling alliance ahead of a state election in Johor.

The prospect of an early national poll intensified after the resignations of former ministers Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, both members of Anwar’s Parti Keadilan Rakyat. Fahmi, a member of the Pakatan Harapan coalition, also said the Cabinet received a briefing on preparations for Parliament’s next sitting, scheduled for June 22.

With allied parties included, the government continues to command a supermajority of 151 seats in the House of Representatives. Malaysia’s next general election is legally required by Feb. 17, 2028.
