Malaysia Accelerates AI Development with Cross-Ministerial Approach

PETALING JAYA – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized the urgency for Malaysia to fast-track the development of artificial intelligence (AI) through innovation and a cohesive cross-ministerial strategy.

In a Facebook post, Anwar highlighted the importance of collaboration among key government bodies, including the digital ministry, the investment, trade and industry ministry, the finance ministry, the science, technology and innovation ministry, Bank Negara Malaysia, and the Securities Commission. This united approach aims to create a systematic framework for AI growth in the country.

The statement followed a high-level meeting chaired by Anwar on AI strategies and digital assets, which he identified as crucial drivers for sustainable economic growth. He also pointed out Malaysia’s potential to lead in sectors such as Islamic digital assets and the halal industry.

“However, decisions regarding these matters need to be made and implemented promptly,” Anwar stressed.

Discussions during the meeting also touched on US trade policy, emphasizing the need to evaluate its implications for Malaysian industries and exporters. Additionally, Anwar underscored the importance of combating cyber threats to boost industry and institutional confidence.
