PETALING JAYA – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has postponed its questioning of former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to Friday due to his poor health. A source from the MACC stated that Ismail, who was initially scheduled to provide statements at the agency’s headquarters in Putrajaya tomorrow, had submitted a medical certificate.
“His statement will now be recorded on March 7 at 10am at the MACC’s headquarters,” the source said.
Yesterday, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed that Ismail was being summoned as a suspect, not merely a witness, in an ongoing corruption investigation.
The MACC previously revealed that about RM170 million in cash and 16kg of gold bars worth millions of ringgit had been seized in an investigation involving four senior officers linked to Ismail. These assets were recovered in raids at the residences of the officers and three other locations believed to be “safe houses.”
The Bera MP, who was first summoned on Feb 19, has also declared his assets as part of a probe into the spending and funding for promotional and publicity purposes during his tenure as prime minister from August 2021 to November 2022.
Azam further disclosed that 13 bank accounts holding approximately RM2 million had been frozen as part of the investigation. However, he clarified that the Yayasan Keluarga Malaysia account remained unfrozen as it was an institutional account rather than a personal one. Ismail’s account remains under investigation.
