Kavita Dalal : Defied the odds to achieve her goals

There was a time when wrestling was a male dominant sport, but not anymore. Now women from all over the world are making their countries proud by dominating wrestling. One such wrestler is Kavita Dalal. She was born on September 20, 1986. She was born in a small village in Haryana state of India. The state of Haryana is known for female foeticide. It is a state where girls do not take even higher education.

She was one of the five siblings. Her brother Sandeep Dalal encouraged her to take up higher studies and become active in sports. Her brother played a major role in her life. It is only because of him that she defied the odds.

Kavita has been a national level champion in Weightlifting and Mixed Martial Arts. But her attraction has always been towards weightlifting. At the age of 20, Kavita joined a weightlifting academy in her hometown on the advice of her brother to take training in weightlifting. After that she took training in 2002 in Faridabad, Haryana. In 2007, she was the National Senior Champion in weightlifting several times. She got the post of constable in Sashastra Seema Bal in 2008 under sports quota.

Dalal had received assurance for promotion, but the government did not promote her. Kavita was not allowed by the government to compete in several tournaments. She was not even allowed to participate in an international tournament in Russia. In the year 2009, she got married and gave birth to a child later. After this she wanted to quit sports. But her husband, who is also a volleyball player, inspired her and helped her to continue her dreams and continue sports.

Under the ring name Kavita Devi, she is an Indian professional wrestler. She is currently in WWE who performs in their developmental territory NXT. To wrestle in WWE, she is the first female professional wrestler of Indian nationality. She has previously wrestled on the independent circuit for Continental Wrestling Entertainment. In 2016 she entered the promotion of the Great Khali to embark her journey as a professional wrestler. She cites her trainer and inspiration as The Great Khali.

She is representing India at international competitions and making India proud. At the South Sian Games, 2016 she won gold in women’s weightlifting 75 kg. Kavita Devi Dalal has achieved the feat of being the first Indian woman to fight in a WWE competition. Kavita’s journey was not easy. She had to face many difficulties but she never left her dream. She was persistent to achieve her goals. She has established that there is nothing which the girls can’t do.  She has set an example as an inspiration for all the girls.
