PUTRAJAYA – The newly established Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) is set to generate 20,000 skilled jobs, benefiting individuals on both sides of the Causeway. The JS-SEZ, which spans the Iskandar development region and Pengerang, aims to support the growth of 50 projects within five years and 100 projects in its first decade.
The agreement for the economic zone was exchanged during the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat in Putrajaya on Jan 7, witnessed by Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
PM Wong emphasized that the JS-SEZ would create opportunities for both nations, enhancing competitiveness and attracting global investments. PM Anwar called the initiative a unique example of bilateral cooperation, emphasizing political stability and clear economic policies as key attractions for investors.
The JS-SEZ will target 11 key sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, renewable energy, and digital economy, while introducing measures like tax incentives, improved transport links, and skills training programs. Both governments will also work on renewable energy trading and enhancing market access for financial institutions.
The JS-SEZ, first announced in October 2023, is seen as a cornerstone for deeper collaboration and a step towards integrating operations between Johor and Singapore for mutual economic growth.
