NEW DELHI – The recent visit by Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to India, the first in a decade by a Vietnamese leader, has marked a significant advancement in the bilateral defence relationship between the two countries. During the visit, India offered funds for the acquisition of patrol boats and coast guard ships, reinforcing Vietnam’s maritime security capabilities.
This growing defence cooperation aligns with India’s ambition to become a key defence supplier and is strategically aimed at boosting Vietnam’s capabilities amid the ongoing territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea. Analysts highlight that this partnership goes beyond arms deals, representing a strategic manoeuvre to balance power in the Indo-Pacific region. This collaboration underscores India’s commitment to supporting regional partners in safeguarding their maritime interests and maintaining stability in the region.
