COPENHAGEN – A recent opinion poll revealed that 85% of Greenlanders oppose becoming part of the United States, despite US President Donald Trump’s remarks that the Arctic island is vital to US security. The survey, conducted by Verian and reported by Danish daily Berlingske, showed only 6% in favor, with 9% undecided.
Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, has broad self-governing rights and the option to declare independence through a referendum. Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede has reiterated that the island is not for sale and that its future lies in the hands of its people.
Meanwhile, Denmark has pledged 14.6 billion crowns (S$2.7 billion) to bolster its Arctic military presence, underscoring Greenland’s strategic importance.
