Greece and Qatar Expand Ties in Trade, Energy and Defence

ATHENS – Greece said on April 29 it had agreed with Qatar to deepen cooperation in trade, energy and defence, building on a framework deal first reached in 2024. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani met in Athens to discuss broadening bilateral relations, with a focus on investment opportunities in Greek infrastructure, energy projects and data‑centre development.

“There are also other areas of cooperation we have been discussing lately such as defence cooperation,” Al Thani said in translated remarks, stressing that global developments make it “very important to strengthen these ties.” The renewed agreement reflects Greece’s ongoing push to attract capital from Qatar, a major global gas supplier whose sovereign‑wealth fund has long shown interest in Balkan and Mediterranean infrastructure and energy assets.

The 2024 framework already included commitments on military and political cooperation, and officials from both sides now aim to leverage Qatar’s financial muscle and Qatar’s National Vision 2030 priorities in energy and digital infrastructure to support Greek growth.
