BEIJING – China has reiterated its commitment to achieving “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan while warning that it will take all necessary steps to defend its territorial integrity, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
Speaking at a press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that China remains committed to resolving the Taiwan issue peacefully but will not tolerate moves toward independence or external interference.
“At the same time, China will take all necessary measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity and resolutely oppose Taiwan independence and external interference,” Mao said.
The comments follow remarks by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi last week, where he firmly rejected Taiwan’s aspirations for independence, stating that the island “will never be a country.”
Beijing has increased military pressure on Taiwan in recent years, conducting multiple rounds of war games near the island. The prospect of forceful reunification remains a key concern, as China continues to view Taiwan as an inseparable part of its territory.
Mao also urged the United States to halt arms sales and military engagement with Taiwan, calling the issue “the core of China’s core interests and the first insurmountable red line in Sino-US relations.”
The United States, Taiwan’s primary arms supplier, has no formal defense treaty with the island, though it remains a key ally. Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te has repeatedly asserted that only the island’s people have the right to determine their future, rejecting Beijing’s territorial claims.
