BERLIN – Borussia Dortmund must secure three points in their home Bundesliga clash against Union Berlin on Saturday, not only to close the gap with the leading teams but, more crucially, to restore the squad’s confidence, coach Niko Kovac said on Friday.
Kovac, who took over in late January, is still searching for his first league victory, having lost both domestic games under his leadership. Last season’s Champions League finalists are currently in 11th place in the Bundesliga, trailing fourth-placed Leipzig by eight points. They are at risk of missing out on next season’s Champions League, with only the top four teams qualifying.
“We are not too far behind,” Kovac stated during a press conference. “We have to win the game tomorrow because we need the three points not only to climb up the table but more for us, for the team, for the confidence to feel that we can win games again.”
Despite a challenging Bundesliga run—managing just one win in their last seven matches—Dortmund comfortably secured their spot in the Champions League Round of 16 with a 3-0 aggregate victory over Sporting. They now face Lille in the knockout stage.
Kovac acknowledged progress in training and team discussions, expressing optimism about future results. He anticipates a tough encounter against Union Berlin, emphasizing the need for his team to demonstrate their desire to win, especially at home.
“We expect Union will be a very aggressive game,” he said. “We play at home and we have to show that we want to win the game.”
Kovac stressed the importance of maintaining a positive outlook despite current challenges. “We want to be winners. That is why we are here. We know the situation and it is not easy, but there is no reason to paint everything black now. I believe after the rain comes the sun.”
A victory on Saturday could provide a much-needed morale boost and help Dortmund regain their footing in the league as they aim to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
