Germany Signals Heightened Drone Threat, Plans Defensive Measures

FRANKFURT – German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt warned on September 27 that the threat posed by drones is “high,” prompting plans to strengthen national defenses against drone incursions.

Officials across Europe have remained on alert following repeated drone disruptions to air traffic in Denmark over the past week, with investigations underway into similar sightings in Germany. Dobrindt described the menace as an “abstract threat” but stressed it is very real in individual cases.

In response, Germany is considering revisions to its aviation security law to authorize military involvement, including the potential shooting down of unauthorized drones. The aim is to enhance preparedness to protect critical infrastructure and safeguard large public gatherings from drone-related threats.

These measures reflect increasing concerns over the use of drones as security risks in Europe amid broader geopolitical tensions.
