Penang Man Arrested for Flying Malaysian Flag Upside Down

GEORGE TOWN – A 59-year-old man in Penang was arrested on August 9 for displaying Malaysia’s national flag, the Jalur Gemilang, upside down. The incident, captured in a 21-second video, showed the man waving the inverted flag on a metal pole in Kepala Batas while another person filmed the act.

Authorities confirmed the matter is being investigated under several laws, including those related to improper use of national symbols, minor offences, and online communications. Sixteen reports about similar incidents have been lodged nationwide, with the majority coming from Penang. Investigation papers are expected to be submitted to the public prosecutor with recommendations for charges.

This case follows other flag-related controversies this year, including a school mistakenly hanging the flag upside down and a publication printing an incorrect illustration. Officials have reminded the public to treat the national flag with dignity and respect, warning that firm action will be taken against violations.
