PETALING JAYA — Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has clarified that any suggestion of political cooperation between his party and Umno reflects personal views of individual members, not the party’s official stance.
Speaking at a Bersatu Hari Raya Aidilfitri event in Jempol, Negeri Sembilan, Muhyiddin said such a decision requires thorough evaluation and will only be discussed at the party’s political bureau and Supreme Leadership Council level.
“There are complex issues, and this matter of cooperation is not as simple as it seems,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.
His remarks come after Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin suggested in a podcast that the party was open to working with Umno due to shared ideological values—a sentiment he repeated during the recent Ayer Kuning by-election, where Umno secured a stronger majority.
In response, Umno Veterans Club secretary Mustapha Yaakub urged Bersatu to dissolve and return to Umno’s fold. Muhyiddin dismissed this idea, reiterating Bersatu’s firm stance, especially its refusal to work with DAP.
“My question is, why not dissolve Umno and join Bersatu instead?” he countered.
