LAGOS — Nigeria’s top football officials resigned on Thursday after mounting criticism over the national teams’ World Cup failures, the Nigeria Football Federation said on its website.
President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and other executive committee members stepped down, with Gusau confirming his decision at a press conference in Abuja. Their departures follow the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 men’s World Cup and the Super Falcons’ loss to South Africa in a playoff this month that ended Nigeria’s unbroken run of appearances at every Women’s World Cup since 1991.
Gusau told reporters he had informed board members of his decision and encouraged others who wished to resign to do so. The shake-up comes a month before the NFF’s elective congress, scheduled for Sept. 27 in Lafia, complicating the federation’s leadership transition and election preparations.
